“What Millennials, and the generations to follow, need from the church are meaningful conversations, dependable relationships, faithful leadership and mentoring, a commitment to missional discipleship, and a lasting promise of enduring inclusivity. More than all of these, for Millennials, however, is a big concept of God.” Gladhearted Disciples by Chris Folmsbee
Friends, it’s on my mind that we are coming up on our one-year anniversary of becoming a Reconciling Congregation! Over the last year, we’ve really not changed much – and at first glance I think that’s a good thing. It says to me, and I hope to each of you, that the long preparation time, the many conversations and the vote really didn’t change who we are! Many, during that time voiced their confusion about why we needed to “come out” this way – identifying ourselves as a Reconciling Congregation when, “We already welcome everyone.” Yes! This spirit of welcome and radical hospitality IS who we are! And now, because of the vote, we can also shout out loud ‘safe sanctuary’ – for everyone. The rainbow designates us as “safe” for those in the LGBTQ community who want to worship and be a part of a Christian community. The rainbows throughout our office area mean that we, as pastors are welcoming to those who are looking for safe people to talk with about gender identity, sexual orientation and faith.
As Pridefest fast approaches (June 5-7 at Summerfest Grounds) I am hopeful that our community will again have a presence – celebrating ALL people as we offer OUR welcome to Bay View UMC and the ministries we share. As of this writing I am working with the health and wellness coordinator about how we might best participate this year. Please let me or Pr. Andy know if you want to volunteer your time that weekend.
As I look further into summer I am hopeful that we will continue to grow our expression of welcome more boldly. Our rainbow flag will be evident at Chill and in the July 4th parade. Our new banner will be installed on the Clement side of the building reinforcing that hope, love and family are ALL here at Bay View UMC. And, in August, we’ll come together for another night of Ham-bingo fun-draising at Hamburger Mary’s.
Recently, my study led me to the opening quote for this article. This list of what Millennials are looking for is what caught my eye: meaningful conversations, dependable relationships, faithful leadership and mentorship, a commitment to missional discipleship and a lasting promise for enduring inclusivity. This IS who we are, friends! Each and every one of you fits this expectation of church for those seeking to know God in a real and personal way. Thanks be to God and may we be blessed as we continue to live out loud the call God has for us a community to faith!
